The much anticipated bar and restaurant complex in the Old Fire Station finally opened last month. One of the restaurants there is MYO which provides all-you-can-eat Indian, Chinese and Thai food.
They offer a fairly lacklustre salad bar but the Indian food really shines. There is a wide range of starters and curries. All the ones I tasted were very good with a nice balance of spice and heat. The Chinese food on offer includes a stir fry section where you choose from a range of meats and vegetables and have them cooked while you wait.
The dessert selection included the now ubiquitous chocolate fountain. There were mini bits of swiss roll and a really tasty treacle sponge available for dunking.
The only problem we encountered was when we asked for the bill. They initially tried to bill us for 8 people despite the fact that only 7 turned up. They were fairly quick at bringing us a corrected bill though. We were then horrified to find that they had added a 10% Service Charge. For a Self-Service restaurant! Drinks were brought to the table but we served ourselves food. One of our party paid by credit card and they forced him to pay the full amount including the compulsory enforced tip. We paid the rest of the bill in full and left them some change for the tip but it fell slightly short of the 10% they demanded. It soured the whole dining experience and I'm unlikely to ever go back there again.

Me and my partner went for a meal here a week or so ago and I must also say I was bitterly disappointed. The decor and setting is beautiful. However, the food and service is comparable to that of Mac Donalds, at least there they bring your food to you.
We had to queue for at least 5 minutes with our plates in our hand. I honestly felt like I was back in a school canteen. The food on the whole was very spicy and unsuitable for a milder palate.
The fruit for the deserts was all in salt water?! when we complained they said that this was due to it being to accompany the chocolate fountain, which was broken. So neither fruit or a chocolate fountain was working.
The floor of the restaurant (if you can call it that) when wet is slippy to the point of being deadly, be warned do not wear heels ladies.
I loved the setting but the food was such a disgrace, and I agree with the 10% service charge? I honestly didnt understand what for, and the waitresses, many of whom had little grasp of what was going on could not remove it. When we complained we simply got an “oh well, dont come back” response.
As has been said if you have the £20 per person to waste, get a Mac Donalds and then go and get a bottle of champagne in escape.
Mixed response22/2/2007 13:06:50
Hi Sarah, thanks for your comment. I've been reading a few other reviews of the restaurant and it certainly seems to have had a mixed response. I think for an all you can eat experience, I've not found anything locally which can beat Wing Wah. I was hoping that MYO would be similar to the Red Hot Buffet Shack (I've been to the one in Nottingham, good food but horribly overcrowded). The choice of food in MYO wasn't as good and of course the 10% service charge took the piss so until a Red Hot Buffet opens in Coventry, it's back to Wing Wah for me.
Thanks for the information10/3/2007 16:00:35
I had arranged today to go to the new MYO resturant with my parents and brother. Im very glad i read your comments on the it, i found the 10% service charge a discrase. When we contacted them the first time they stated 'the 10% charge is compulsory for groups smaller than 6' We then discussed this, dicsideing it was sneaky and underhand that they could not provide us with the accurate cost of the meal before we booked. We then rang back to cancil the booking (for a party of 4) and once hearing this his story changed, saying 'ohhh no, the service charge is only applicable for groups larger than 6' which makes no economic sence to their compnay. I was peterbed by this as i felt that he was trying to be caniving but more so just lieing blatently to me. I will not go there today and probably not tomorow.... perhaps never. I settled for the wing wah which i have been to several times and it pleases me to say i have never had any problems with their service or quality. Thank you for your information it has saved me some hastle. Cheers Chris

Yes, I agree Wing Wah all the way for us. Never too busy a brilliant selection of food and lovely staff. I'd say a top choice

The service charge is OPTIONAL, and is NOT compulsory. Do not pay it.

i went to myo today for lunch with some of my students who have learning difficulties, the staff were pleasent and very helpful. i have a milk allergy and they were very helpful un telling me what contained milk products. i thought that hte selection of food was ok however the deserts were very disapointig!! yuk!! i also have been a big fan of the wing wah, but no longer go because of their recent contaminated food obviously by some over sexed weirdo!! and mouse droppings, wing wah is definatly of the menu!!

I thought MYO had a great setting and nice(average)food. I felt that the entrance was not easy to find, I think this lets them down as you can easily miss them when walking past. I didnt get charged any service on my bill!! Those who think Wing Wah is better - you have got to be joking -i've only been there once and thought it looked like a canteen and the food was not very nice, I've had much better chinese food elsewhere. In my view the best place to eat food in Coventry has got to be NANDOS!
Same Myo??30/1/2008 14:37:59
I went to Myo at the weekend, and i and my 3 friends absulutly loved it! The choice of foods was great and tasted very nice indeed. It did not look like a canteen at all! I was pleased with the hot and cold buffet selection esp the salad bar. I found the desserts was okay though not a great selection the chocolate fountain was brill! We had no complaints and enjoyed our experience there. The staff were friendly as was the thai chef that made our stri-fry right there and then and we did not pay 10% service charge! I dont agree with some of the above comments as i feel the restaurant does do good food and it should be recognised for that! If you dont like queuing for your food you shouldnt go to a buffet style restaurant! Simple as! I will def be letting everyone know about Myo!
MYO13/2/2008 09:40:22
I totally disagree with a lot of comments above. From the very first time that my friends and I went to MYO, we LOVED it. We go there quite often and find the staff, chefs and manager are very pleasant and helpful. We have never paid the 10% service charge. As far as the food is concerned, the wide variety and changeable menu is great. They do you stirfrys on the spot and you choose what you want. Nans, tandoor dishes, fish etc are made for you fresh. As far as the desserts are concerned, no probs there either.
MYO is definetely one of the best places to eat in Coventry. We also tend to go to Wing Wah and find that that is to packed and its always the same food. No change in the menu. With MYO you have a better variety and choice. WAY TO GO MYO. Love the decor especially when you guys used the little changing candles.

myo is imitation of jimmy spice ..when u imitate something its never right
19/5/2008 18:59:34
Hi guys and girls, thank you for your mixed comments. I agree the service charge is optionaland it was a error made when opening restaurant. Anyone who had a meal between open and march 2008 who has receipt will get 20% of the meal and drinks. Yes I did imitate Jimmy spice cos there is nothing like this inCoventry but I had to get chefs from diff places Cos Im not a chef myself so I apologise if the food was not upto standard. We are always improving and hope we can satisfy You further. In Summer all buffets are 5.99 until September so try it out and make your own !!!
MYO4/6/2008 14:47:48
I am very surprised by some of the comments above. I have been to MYO's a number of times since it opened (maybe 15 - 20!)with friends and family in the evenings and also with friends from work at lunchtime and, I can honestly say, that we have always had excellent food and excellent service. There is always a great choice and I particularly love the stir fry bar because I can choose exactly what I want. There is something there for everyone and if you want a particular dish then just ask because,if they can, they will cook it for you. The drinks are pretty reasonable too - we often have a bottle of wine because they are sensibly priced. I will never tire of going to MYO - it's the best eating place in Coventry!
Not a very good reception!4/7/2008 13:52:22
I been recommended by a few ppl to try out myo so i did one evening, much to my suprise the staff looked like they had just been to a funeral so no smiles (that has to say alot)the food choice was not very good and yet once tasted one curry i was better off with a cheap uncle bens for the night, i was extreamly disapointed witht he sevice and food although the decour was lovely. i wont be going there again thats for sure and perhaps they should think of closing.
abt waiter & waitress21/7/2008 02:31:27
nice restaurant.nice decoration. but irritating. everytime waiter & waitress used to asked for drink. otherwise nice place.
Myo such a shame2/8/2008 17:42:12
My family and I are big eaters and eat out regularly around the midlands and had been waiting for an alternative buffet to that of the wing wah, which I have found to be excellent on one visit then not so good on the next. We have been to myo twice and on both occasions have been disapointed with the variety of the food and the very slippery floor. Also the fact that you have to leave the building (more or less) to use the toilets (men) makes it a slightly unrelaxed environment. Its not altogether clear what the chefs will cook for you there and then and the Large brass lids to the currys are both awkward/impossible to place down and very hot. It is beautifully decorated and could be an amazing eating experience but sadly it falls short of the mark.
Empty Vessels Make Noise5/10/2008 15:35:53
On a Scale of 10 :
Indian Food - 5/10 Chinese Food - 2/10 Thai Food - 0/10
I prefer WingWah rather than MYO. £15 is a rip off. I will not go there anymore. £5 box from WingWah is better !
They have a Dosa Station but dont know how to make dosas !!! Their Chef needs training from Chennai Dosa, London. For those who like dosas, visit Chennai Dosa when you get an opportunity to go to London.
I couldn't find my wallet this morning - I realised I must have left it in my desk in work. I didn't want it there all weekend so I thought it would be best for me to nip back in to retrieve it. It was a 3 hour 'nip'. There were no trains running from Coventry station (thanks to engineering works) so I had to get onto a rail replacement bus. This decided to stop at every station between Coventry and Birmingham International and took ages. The only consolation was seeing a goat standing on a picnic table, somewhere halfway between Canley and Tile Hill.
