Home Grown Chillies

Story location: Home / Blog / food_and_drink /
27/Sep/2009

Earlier in the year I bought a 'mexican garden' seed kit from the Woolworths closing down sale. I never managed to get the oregano to germinate but I have several tomato and chilli plants. Most of the chillies and tomatoes are still green and unripe but we have had 5 small red tomatoes (not enough for a pizza sauce) and one red chilli so far.

I finely chopped one of the chillies and sprinkled it onto one of tonights pizzas. The other toppings were: red pesto, salmon, red onion and cheese. It was a very tasty pizza.

The chillies were fairly strong when I tasted one on its own, but there was a slightly unripe or possibly just a raw flavour. By the time they had cooked on the pizza they were fine.

Red Chilli

There are many more green chillies on the plant so hopefully we will have a good supply for the autumn.

Hey, good looking chilli there. I was wondering what variety the tomatoes are? I was given the same set from Woolworths and not knowing much about it just planted all the seeds and recycled the packaging! Now my friend tells me I need to know what variety they are so I know whether to grow them outside or inside. Cheers.

Hi Emma,

According to the packet I had, they are Moneymaker tomatoes. I put most of the tomatoes outside and by autumn only half of them had ripened fully. The rest were still green. I was told recently that that's quite a common problem with moneymaker, not ripening before the weather gets too cold. They should be ok indoors or in a greenhouse.

I managed to ripen some of the green ones by putting them in the dark with a couple of red tomatoes mixed in with them. The rest I used to make a green tomato chutney.

Mike.
